Short description:
Since Ulrich lost his wife, he has never been the same. He travels the lands of Hyderia incessantly and rarely returns to his home, until he finally finds himself an old man stricken with depression. The feeling of having wasted his life, that he has done nothing with it, haunts him. But if there is one thing he has always been good at is telling stories. And so it happens that for years Ulrich boasts of heroic deeds that he never did, just to be able to stand himself a little more.
But then Ewa, the young daughter of his last remaining friend, is kidnapped and all at once Ulrich receives a slap in the face of all his lies. Since he is the only "hero" who can save her, he is chosen to rescue her and, as befits a hero, the old man agrees, even though it tears him up inside. Then he is also to take with him the over-excited, annoying four-legged friend Max, whom he can't stand for the life of him; but his nose would undoubtedly be an enormous help in his search. Ulrich concludes that it is never too late to become a real hero.
Although Ulrich gains more and more zest for life on his journey, finds new friends (including the cowardly alchemist Caspar; the knight Igriach, whose moustache has almost as much character as he does; even Max grows fond of him with his scatterbrained ways), becomes more and more the hero he would like to be, he feels hopelessly at the mercy of the past. But when Ulrich is on the verge of giving up, he finds a magic mirror whose power is greater than he would have thought at first. Is Ulrich finally a match for the true enemy who hides in the shadows and pulls all the strings?
